In the year 1914, a ship was attacked while traveling in the distant sea. Accused of collusion with pirates, the second official Bai Zhu Sheng endured many hardships to clear his name.

Bai Zhu Sheng’s life falls apart, becoming a prime suspect after returning as the sole survivor of an attack on his ship. His fiancée leaves him and he is sentenced to spend time in prison. In prison he meets a gang of valiant thieves who teach him many skills. After his release, Bai Zhu Sheng was knighted after saving the passengers of a British merchant ship in Hong Kong. He sets out on a path of vengeance under the name of Burong Bai and returns to Shanghai several years later to begin his plan.
